Ballarat Cup by Kirrily Parry

Ballarat Cup 2011.

The sun may have been only just peeking through the clouds at this year’s Sportsbet Ballarat Cup but that did not stop the racing fashionista’s from far and wide turning up and shining in the Myer fashions on the field.

Colour was the order of the day as contestants embraced the trend we have seen throughout this year’s spring racing carnival. Judge and young designer of the year 2009, James Penrose described the day’s competition as being “Surprisingly tough, so many beautiful outfits!”. James was not the only talented and well known judge on the day he was joined by Miss Universe Australia winner 2008 Laura Dundovic and this year’s “Face of Country Racing Victoria” Breanne Fanning.

The first category for the day was Best Millinery, This section attracted the most entrants for the day and saw and amazing array of designs. After 5 heats the top 10 progressed through to the final after much deliberation MC Casey Bruce announced the winner to be Courtney Kerr from Bendigo. Courtney who also made the finals for Best dressed Lady of the day had on an amazing combination of navy, tangerine and crisp white. Courtney created her own millinery masterpiece that perfectly complemented her outfit and used some new and innovative techniques that made her headwear really stand out amongst a strong field.

Next up was the gentlemen’s time to shine. The men’s competition has improved out of sight in the past few years with entrant really embracing the use of colours, textures and accessories. With such tough competition it was great to see a local come out on top, Michael Skrokov. Michael who was entered in to fashions by his girlfriend wore a well put together ensemble comprising of a tailored suit that was grey with subtle black piping detail on the collar and pockets. The stand out suit teamed with a crisp White shirt, Black tie and a Black fedora proved to be a winning combination.

The local lady of the day category is a new inclusion to the Ballarat Cup day fashions on the field at Ballarat Cup this year. This category was designed to encourage local women to support local businesses and to give ladies a chance to compete against those with similar fashion resources. The crowd was a buzz watching their family and friends up on stage and I think this category was a great way to encourage more ladies to get into the racing fashion world. Mel Senior was a very deserving winner on the day and classic 50’s style dress with ¾ length sleeve and a full skirt made from a deep purple brocade fabric. This fabric was also incorporated into her millinery which she made herself.  Mel attends many local race meeting and really knows how to accessories and dress appropriately for a day at the races. Second place went to a lady in another classic ensemble of gelati tones of mint, pink and cream and the third place winner (yours truly) wore an orange and white 50’s style dress made by a Ballarat designer Clasch Designs and millinery by Danica Erard millinery of country NSW.

The final category for the day was the coveted “Myer Lady of the Day”. Entrants came from all over Victoria and even interstate to compete for the title and over $1000 worth of prizes. The standard and scope of outfits was outstanding and ranged from classic race wear to the more fashion forward contemporary designs that were such a hit at metropolitan meeting this year. Five strong heats turned into one final of 12 deserving ladies. Judges Laura, James and Breanne deliberated and finally after a nervous wait for the competitors and crowd alike, Laura took the stage to announce the winners. Third Place went to Jacqueline Russo of Melbourne wearing a new season Alex Perry colour block dress of vibrant red, blue and pink teamed with perfectly matching accessories including a perfect blue manicure. Second Place went to Alex Hecker from Geelong. Alex wore a simple but elegant tangerine frock with cream detailing around the neck and hemlines. She used cream for all of her accessories and wore a cream coolie with orange and cream flowers to complete her look. Finally the time had come to announce the winner, personally I was torn between so many of the ladies on stage that I had no idea who the judges would pick. That lucky lady turned out to be Bobbi-Jean Edwards from Taralgon! Bobbi’s outfit was very seasonally and weather appropriate which the judges cited as one of the reasons for choosing this yellow, grey, black and white outfit.  Bobbi wore a white tailored shirt tucked into yellow knee length skirt, a grey cape with black trim and also black stiletto’s and Spanish style neck tie. Her millinery was an outstanding black straw base with a spray of white and yellow orchids on top. Bobbi took some fashion risks and they paid off due to her immaculate presentation.

Away from the fashions and on to the track for the running of the 2011 Ballarat Cup where the winner on the day was Domesky, Trained by Mick Kent and ridden by Brad Rawiller. This was a breakthrough win for the gelding that has had many close races throughout the season. This was also the first time in more than 3 decades that a trainer and jockey combination has won the Ballarat Cup back to back. The pair also won with My Bentley in 2010. The track on the day was a slow six due to the storms on Friday night and Saturday leading up to the race. Luckily the rain stayed away all day so the punters were out in full force much to the delight of the Ballarat Turf Club who have suffered a few tough years of late.

I would like to thank all involved at the Ballarat Turf Club and Myer Ballarat for an amazing day of racing and fashion. To MC Casey Bruce and judges Laura Dundovic, James Penrose and Breanne Fanning for all of your hard work on the day and for keeping the event running smoothly. To all of the other local business who sponsored on the day your support is what keeps events like this going so keep up the good work.

Perth Fashions on the Field by Debbie Kelly 17/10/11

Opening day of Ascot and what better way to celebrate the begininning of Perth's  Spring Carnival with the WA leg of Australia's most prestigious Fashions on the Field comptetition, with the winner representing WA at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

We could not have asked for a more beautiful day, the weather Gods really turned on their magic.  The buzz and excitement of the first day of Ascot is always a special time.

Perth is definitely seeing a high calibre of entrants.  I am delighted each year to see what the WA girls interpret as racing fashion.  Going are the mini dresses and we are seeing the more suitable ladylike attire, with millinery, becoming de rigueur, with thought given to compliment their outfits.  One thing for sure Perth girls beat to their own drum when it comes to frocking up for the races.  From all the entrants there was only one major no-no.  We will just call her Miss Romper Suit, sans millinery.  No more comment here.

Among entrants from other states flying over to try their luck I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Wellings, not only is she always exquisitely dressed, but an absolutely beautiful person.

Jason Brunsdon did a fantastic job at hosting on the day.  Among the judges was the beautiufl Laura Dundovic, the talented designer Aurelio Costarella, Myer WA Regional Manager Kerry Davenport, The West Australian fashion editor Pip Christams and Myer Stylist  Andrea Tonkin and WA's 2010 Fashion on the Field winner Brooke Smith.

WA's first entrant to grace the catwalk was 85 year old, Joan Bayliss dressed in a beautiful turquoise suit with complimenting millinery.  Joan's dedication for entering fashions on the feild for the last 45 years is what it is all about - frocking up, having fun and enjoying a day at the races.

The biggest congratulations to WA's winner Elicia Anders whose winning outfit of a tailored cream suit trimmed with red piping created by Rox Newton and Simone Passera and matching millinery made by Elicia herself.

Elicia is no novice to the Fashions on the Field catwaslk.  In 2010 she won the Oaks Day Fashions on the field at Ascot.  I know the lovely Elicia personally and I have every bit of confidence that she will represent WA proudly.  Also Congratulations to second and third runners up, Dayna Bella Wandry and Kate Reynolds repectively.

The only downfall, unlike other States of Australia, WA lacks the various competing catergories.  It would be fantastic if we could have a category for our male racegoers who suit up for the occasion, a couples category and different age grousps for the fabulous ladies who put so much effort into frocking-up for the races.   Mmmmm, but I'll work on that......
